Human Factors is a fascinating subject that is taught in industries where lives could be lost if workers make mistakes such as in medicine or the aviation industry. The FAA reported that 60%-80% of all aviation accidents were caused by human error but this is not necessarily a reflection of the competence of the worker. Human Factors considers other elements like the work environment; is there adequate lighting, are the tools and equipment appropriate for the task, are the workers fatigued etc, to ensure that employers are setting their people up for success.
Human Factors tends to be actively taught and refreshed in highly regulated industries, but it is a subject that all leaders in all industries should understand to optimise performance without compromising safety.
