Sir Arthur Marshall Flying Scholarship opens the door for young pilots under Air League scheme

The Air League, a leading UK-based aviation and aerospace charity aiming to change lives through aviation, has announced that 25 talented young individuals will receive this year's Sir Arthur Marshall Flying Scholarship.

With Marshall’s support, the winners - who range in age from 14 to 23 - have been awarded a total of 53 hours of flying scholarships and £5,000 of gliding bursaries to help achieve their dreams of taking to the skies.

“The Air League is proud to announce the awarding of 25 Sir Arthur Marshall Flying and Gliding Scholarships. These scholarships reflect the unwavering commitment of both the Air League and Marshall of Cambridge to nurturing the next generation of aviation talent.

“We extend our gratitude to Marshall of Cambridge for their continued support and wish this year's recipients all the best in their upcoming training.”

In line with the programme’s objective of ensuring anyone can pursue an interest in aviation, a large proportion of recipients of the Sir Arthur Marshall Scholarship are from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented. Notably, 30% of scholars are female (compared to the industry average of 6.5% for pilots); 45% of scholars are under the age of 18, and 48% are aged between 18-24; and 45% of scholars have parents who are not university educated.

The Air League’s broader scholarship programmes include powered flying courses, gliding courses, the UK’s first electric flying Scholarship and fully sponsored Private Pilot's Licence (PPL) courses worth over £12,000 each. These scholarships will take place at flying and gliding clubs across England, Wales, and Scotland over the summer.

In total for 2024, The Air League awarded 90 scholarships worth over £140,000 to young people across the UK.

In addition to supporting the Sir Arthur Marshall Flying Scholarship, Marshall is proud to fund the Attagirls Molly Rose Pilot Scholarship in association with Aetheris Publishing and the British Women Pilots' Association. This unique scholarship is designed to empower young women to achieve their dream of becoming licensed pilots and is a testament to our commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in aviation.
