Q&A with Marta Barrabino, Futureworx’ new Head of Innovation

Futureworx is delighted to welcome Marta Barrabino, who is starting today in the newly created role of Head of Innovation. To mark the occasion, we’re publishing a short interview exploring Marta’s diverse engineering experience, her reasons for joining Futureworx, and her vision for the role of technology in addressing key societal and environmental challenges.

"For the last four years I’ve worked in fusion energy research, bringing the power of the sun to Earth to address energy de-carbonisation by the second half of this century.

I also hold an Executive Diploma in Strategy and Innovation from Oxford Saïd Business School, and in 2020 I was seconded to the UK COVID-19 SAGE group to support the government with scientific communication.

Trained as an engineer, I’m an experienced programme manager with a background in delivering complex cross-functional projects requiring good understanding and management between research, technology, governmental and commercial dependencies.

I believe in teamwork, collaboration, purpose and good leadership as key pillars to confront the big challenges facing humanity."

Why did you choose Marshall Futureworx?

Marshall Futureworx has a reputation that stands out in the industry, and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation, creativity and people. I felt that by joining the Futureworx team I would be making an investment in my future.

I also share the group’s values and aspirations, including the belief that we have the potential to create a world that is both environmentally conscious and technologically advanced.

Importantly, the Futureworx team is made up of people with very different backgrounds and areas of expertise. Fostering an environment that values different viewpoints and encourages collaboration can generate unique perspectives and drive innovation.

What have been some of your biggest achievements in either personal, educational or professional life?

Living and working abroad has had a profound impact on my personal growth, teaching me the value of being disciplined and pushing beyond my comfort zone.

It has been a challenge, but over time I’ve gained confidence, refined my speaking skills, and learned to effectively communicate my ideas in a foreign language. Most importantly, though, I’ve come to appreciate how opening your mind to diverse ideas and backgrounds can shape your perspective and approach to future endeavours.

What are you looking forward to the most about your new role?

As an engineer, my experience is across delivery of projects and programmes requiring a firm understanding of research, technology, government and commercial dependencies.

I’m excited to be able apply this experience within a forward-thinking community that shares my vision. The prospect of joining forces with like-minded individuals who are equally passionate about making a technological impact is truly exhilarating.

A couple of projects that stand out to me are net zero challenges and AI integration, as they have the potential to revolutionize and create tangible impact through cutting-edge technology to address gaps in global markets. I am eager to be a part of a team that actively engages with such projects, as they offer opportunities to learn and collaborate.

What are the more exciting opportunities in tech right now?

Being part of the current technological landscape is incredible, but what truly captivates me is the ability to combine different technologies, capabilities and fields to address significant challenges. For example, I think there’s a lot of potential around integrating AI with clean tech, animated materials, symbiotic human/machine design or bio-engineering. These advancements have the potential to shape and adapt to evolving global and societal demands.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work, any hobbies or interests?

I enjoy photography and painting as way of expression, travelling to keep my mind open, and I like to release stress with HIIT and yoga.
